My interview&reaction(position-Asian-American student)

My article is about race relations. I think there are many cases concerning race discrimination. I read the article which is about race relations require repairs. After 911, the United States is destroying the rights of many Arab-Americans. Oh, who is a Korean-American and race-relations adviser, said about need for Asian-Americans and blacks to come together in order to fight racial discrimination. She told of a case she is handing concerning a black man who was arrested for drunk-driving. The charge was for a DWI (Driving While Intoxicated), but real charge was DWB (Driving While Black).

I had an interview about race relations on campus with an Asian-American student. Her name is Wu, S. and she is Taiwan American. Before I met her I supposed to hear about discrimination from her, but she has never experienced about race discrimination. She thinks most people who are in SIU are very friendly. She has many friends who are different races from her. However, she doesn’t want to get married with some different races. I think race discrimination on SIU is not big deal, but it still exists in some area. I have also some experiences about this. Race discrimination is big problem. We should fight up against this. And also, we should change our fixed thoughts about other races before requiring the right equality. We are the same person.

my interview and response

This article mentions that the admission of black students has been reduced at UC Berkeley. Some people think it is because of high tuition; some people say Michigan’s system chooses admissions that are based on race; others consider that policies constrict black admissions. Finally, the article mentions that Proposition 209 supporters say it is a mistake to focus race.
About my article, I think most schools, especially famous university, like Berkeley, should not judge on the basis of race. I feel that high tuition is the most serious problem. Most black students are not rich enough to study at famous schools. Tuition is the first criterion that most of them use to choose a school, but most famous schools use high tuition to discriminate against students. I think it is another kind of discrimination. Most schools have this situation, but Berkeley is so obvious that it is reported.
I interviewed an Asian man. He is a Chinese and studies in SIU. His name is Jian, W. He has been here seven years. In his opinion, the race problem is not obvious at SIU. Most people do not emphasize their racism. He has many friends who are different races but he says just a little are close friends, because it is a few difficult to enter the different racial group. He told me that most Asians do not have racism; besides some countries that have cultism, and he think racism is apparent in the western world. He never thinks about getting married with a female of a different race. Maybe it is because he has gotten married already. He says discrimination makes him feel uncomfortable. If he sees discrimination situation, he will prohibit it. He considers that racial problem is very difficult to solve, unless people change their rooted perception.
I agree with his opinion. In Taiwan, seldom do we hear about discrimination, but I heard that there are many examples of discrimination that happened in the U.S.A. or other western nations. I think everyone knows discrimination really exists, though sometimes they do not represent it. As far as I am concerned, the race problem is misunderstanding of to other cultures. If we could spend more time realizing about other races and take them as same level, I believe racism and discrimination will be gone someday.

Interview and my response

Interviewee's position: African-American Student

I interviewed an African-American man at the recreation center. He thinks that race relations at SIU are just a smaller example of the race problems in Southern Illinois. He thinks people in this area need to be more understanding of people from different races. But, unfortunately he doesn't have any close friends who are of a different race. However, he thinks that all races are the same and that no race is more special than another. So, he doesn't mind getting married to someone of a different race, - he's looking for someone who has the right attitude and personality, not necessarily of the same race. When he sees discrimination which is in favor of his race, it doesn't bother him very much. He said his race has been discriminated against for too many years and now they are trying to catch up. But, when he sees discrimination which is against his race, it makes him angry. Lastly, I asked him about a solution for these problems. He thinks we won't find a solution to the problems unless we all want to change. People have to want to change.

I totally agree with what he said. Discrimination is not a small thing, not something one person or only a few can fix. We all need to try to change this problem. But, I also think it's natural to hang around with people of the same race, because we have the same cultures and often the same mother language, so we understand each other. So, I think we just need to not prejudge people based on their race.

University examines campus race relations

My article is about discriminatory harassment at Emory University in Atlanta. The university responed to an isolated incident by mandating diversity training within the anthropology department and distributing a discriminatory harassment policy to the entire campus. A professor of anthropology has recevied sanctions for speaking the phrase "six niggers in a woodpile" in her class. She declined to comment for this article.

I didn't know that racial discrimination was a current issue until I started this project. To me it is not a big deal. I've never had this kind of experience even though I'm a Korean living within the U.S. But, I found a lot of current articles about racial discrimination, especailly involving African-Americans. I feel sorry for them. We are all people of the earth. I have no idea why some races think they are better than other races.

Interview about Race Relations on campus

Interviewee's position: Asian-American student

Today afternoon, I met one Asian-American student at the student center. Her name is Wu, S. She said she has never experienced about discrimination. She said that most people are very friendly. Also she has many friends of different races. She thinks her race’s ability as same as other races. However, she doesn't want to get married some races that she didn't mention. She will respond to depend on who is right , who is wrong about racial relations.

My interview & reaction (position-white student)

According to my article, some people have been stopped by police while they were driving, flying, or going across the street, just because their color; most of them are black and other minority. Many Americans know about racial profiling, though the stereotype to judge a person is unresonable. I think the goverment need to prohibit this by law, though this is a widespread problem, and had existed for a long time. Besides, you don't know when you need help; maybe you will get more help from different races you are not in.

This afternoon, I went to the recreation center and asked two people. One is a white student who was playing basketball. He said he has a lot of friends of different races and he thinks maybe there is only physical difference between white people and others, and they often play basketball with people of different races. The other girl works there. She is an SIU student; I asked her about BAS(Black American Studies) , and she said only two white students attend the class, and she is one of them. The difference between white and black students is white students have more opportunities than black students. If her boyfriend is of another race, only if their concept and behavior, religion are almost the same, she will not reject to marry him. She also has other friends from Asia; the big difference is culture and custom. On campus, I think racial discrimination is not a big problem; maybe students don't have much competition between each other now. But after they work in the society, maybe they will feel more differences like filling in the application or finding the job. In my country, our race relationships improve all the time. Because government tries to make us hold together, we learned each other's culture and language more than ten years ago. This is a good phenomenon.

So far so good; I will try to find someone who has racial prejudice, that might be exciting. But if he has racial prejudice, will he talk to me?

Urge Congress to Stop Racial Profiling

This article is talking about "racial profiling".I think it is unfair to judge people by the stereotypes of their color, religion or ethnicity.Because everyone has human rights, and i have a lot of friends they are different races, but we are good friends! So,i will go against the unfair law.I don't think my race is superior to others in my country.
